quint 4How often are site inspections conducted?

Site inspections are normally conducted on an annual basis. When we inspect a business, some of the items we look for are blocked egress corridors and exits, fire extinguisher service tags, automatic fire suppression and alarm inspection documents and proper operation of exit/ emergency lights. Most businesses conduct self-inspections on a monthly schedule. The frequency of inspections is based on type of occupancy and compliance with fire codes. Occupancies with hazardous materials are inspected more frequently because of the hazard to the public. Businesses that are non-compliant are also inspected more frequently. The safety of those who live, work and travel through our community are the most important factor for fire safety inspections.

Fire extinguishers should be checked monthly to make sure that the arrow is in the green section on the pressure gauge. If the arrow is not located in the green section, then the extinguisher needs to be serviced by a licensed fire protection specialist. Fire extinguishers are required by code to be serviced annually by a licensed fire protection specialist.

Exit/ emergency lights are required to be illuminated in the event of a power outage. Most of the exit/ emergency lights have a test button located on the unit so you have the ability to check for proper operation.

Automatic fire suppression and alarm systems are required by code to be serviced annually by a licensed fire protection specialist. A copy of the service work should be on file at your facility for the fire inspector to review at the fire inspection. Hood systems are required by code to be serviced semi-annually.
